A Flippin’ Good Time at The Groves submitted by Sandy Paxton
Jim and Patti Nearey met while shopping at Hyde Park. He was looking for Waterford crystal. She was buying Godiva chocolate for a fellow teacher. They kept running into each other at several shops. Jim asked Patti if she liked chocolate. He then asked her if she liked coffee and invited her for a cup. The rest is history as they have been married for 17 years. They each have three children and nine wonderful grandchildren with whom they love spending time.
Jim is a retired tugboat captain and hails from Catskill, New York. He is Treasurer for the Men’s Golf League and 2nd Vice President for the HOA. Patti was born in West Virginia but considers herself a “Florida girl.” She is a retired school teacher. One of Patti’s goals is to make sure everyone who comes to the Pancake Breakfast feels welcome. She works hard to make sure “it’s a flippin good time.”
The second Saturday of each month from January through October starts at 4 AM for Patti and Jim. That’s the day for the Social Club Pancake Breakfast. Patti has been Chairperson for the past two years when she became Vice President of the Social Club. Carol James and Sandy Paxton are Co-Chairs and Patti’s shopping partners. Patti begins her day making sausage and gravy for the Breakfast.
Jim loads their car with raffle gifts and other items they need to get to the Clubhouse/Civic Center. At 5 AM they get to the Clubhouse where they are met by “Coach” Bellefeuille to start setting up electrical cords for cooking. The breakfast crew starts arriving around 5:45 to cook sausage, scramble eggs (plain and “adorned”), make French toast, or flip plain or blueberry pancakes. Biscuits and sausage gravy, orange juice and coffee complete the $5 all-you-can-eat menu. Each volunteer enthusiastically takes over his or her assigned position...sometimes sleepily but always smiling.
Jim and Patti, a big thank you for all you do for The Groves!
