Health Tips for Seniors

Aging is so different now than it was for our parents and grandparents.  We now know so much more about avoiding things that will be detrimental to our health and taking steps to keep us healthy and active in our senior years.

Here are a few tips that can help:

Do not smoke.  Smoking causes cancer, heart failure, cancer and excessive wrinkling and numerous other ailments.

Keep active.  Physical activity will help you maintain a healthy weight, sleep better, reduce stress, look and feel good.

Eat healthy.  Many illnesses such as high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes and osteoporosis can be prevented or controlled with dietary changes.

Prevent falls.  Remove loose throw rugs and keep paths clear of electrical cords and clutter.  Use nightlights in hallways and bathrooms. Wear shoes with good support. A key to preventing falls is to maintain and improve balance and lower body strength.  Attending SilverSneakers Strength & Balance classes in The Groves is a perfect way to do this.

Stay current with your immunizations and preventative medical screenings.  Make a list of any questions you may have to bring with you on your next doctor’s visit.

Prevent skin cancer.  Protect your skin from the sun and visit your dermatologist regularly.

Have regular dental, vision and hearing checkups.  These are extremely important to seniors’ health.

Manage stress.  Make time for fun and friends.  Coping skills greatly affect our health.
